I started suffering from dry lips a few years ago and it lasted almost six months before I found a cure. It started with just dry lips and then it spread to cracks at the side of my mouth. This was extremely painful and it started to interupt my eating patterns.
What Did I Do First?
My first reaction was to go to the doctors which I did, the Doctor gave me some mouth gel which temporarily solved the cracking. The real problem was that something was causing my lips to crack at the sides of my mouth and it wasn't just an infection. I thewn returned to the doctors and to be honest I didn't really get any more help from them so I decided to try and solve this one on my own. I did some research on the internet and nothing really came back to me with the symptoms I was getting.
What Were My Symptoms?
My lips changed on a daily basis, sometimes they would just be dry, other days they would be puffed up and red and other days they would be tight and sore. Believe me when I say this, all of these things were extremely painful and not very nice to look at either! The six months I suffered with this condition spread over Christmas and I still look back at photographs and see the state of my mouth. When the cracking got really bad I started to look like the Joker from Batman!
How I Coped
I think I started to get addicted to lipsil and lip moisturisers like Vaseline, I was literally using these types of things about ten times or more a day. Being a male it was quite difficult and sometimes embarrassing to try and cover up but I was in that much discomfort I needed to do something.
My Conclusions
After some research I realised my dry lips and the cracks at the side of my mouth could be down to a number of things. All of these things I found out weren't recommended by my doctor it must be said but this isn't to say that your doctor won't be as unhelpful. The things it could be down to were as follows:
• Lack of water
• Lack of iron
• Food allergy
• Too many eggs
It wasn't until a few months later when the skin on my back started to erupt that I went for an allergy test. In this test I tested sensitive to a number of things and one of those things was cow's milk. One of the main symptoms of being allergic to cow's milk is that your lips swell, I put two and two together and so decided to try Soy Milk instead. I noticed a massive difference in the state of my lips within about three days, about 2 weeks later my dry lips had completely cleared up. Don't get me wrong I stil use Lipsil sometimes in the winter and I did try drinking more water but I think the combination of all of these things helped me get over the problem. |
