Most of us know someone who has or had cancer - a relative, a friend, a neighbour. Some of us know people who have or had cancer and we don't even know it. And then there are people we don't know but who we know of, people whose stories we know even though we've never met them. We have listed below 10 famous people who've battled skin cancer, here they are:
1. Bob Marley
The iconic musician died as a result of melanoma that started on his big toe.
2. Elizabeth Taylor
screen icon Elizabeth Taylor had a basal cell skin cancer on her cheek.
3. Bill Clinton
Doctors scraped a suspicious lesion from the former president's back during his annual physical and tests later revealed it was a basal-cell carcinoma. By the time we were told of his condition it had fortunately been cured.
4. Ronald Regan
Was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1985 and skin cancer in 1987 - both were surgically removed.
5. Burgess Meredith
Famous actor who died from a combination of melanoma and Alzheimer's. Probably best known for his "Mickey" character in the "Rocky" movies. Appeared in more than 120 movies in his long Hollywood career including both "Grumpy Old Men" movies and "Clash of the Titans".
6. Clint Eastwood
Superstar Clint Eastwood underwent skin cancer surgery just days before the birth of his new baby girl.
7. John McCain
Senator John McCain's battle with the most deadly type of skin cancer began in 1993, when doctors discovered and surgically removed a melanoma on his left arm.
8. Regis Philbin
Although unknown outside of the United States, beloved talk show and game show host Regis Philbin had two skin cancer lumps removed through two separate procedures called Mohs surgery (also known as chemosurgery). The first lump was a sqaumous-cell cancer that had to be removed from his hand. The second was more serious and on his face. Philbin is yet another in a list of famous people with skin cancer who survived it.
9. Ewan McGregor
The fair-skinned Scottish actor just revealed that he had a brush with skin cancer. The 37-year-old "Deception" star says he is "fine" now, but confessed he learned an important lesson... the hard way. McGregor told a reporter from the BBC that doctors removed several suspicious-looking facial moles (one of the larger ones was located just below his right eye) as a precaution, but tests later revealed that a few were cancerous.
10. Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson has reportedly been diagnosed with skin cancer. The singer was found to have cancerous cells on his body and tests showed spots of skin cancer on his body, and cells which could turn to skin cancer on his face.
